Family Life Education

Executive Summary

The following summary describes the joint application for funding from the California Department of Health Services to reduce teen and unwanted pregnancies and fatherlessness in Tulare County by the Tulare County Office of Education School Health Programs and School-to-Career Project.

The Tulare County Office of Education has joined forces with the Tulare County Office of Education School-to-Career Program and Tulare Technical High School to provide a program what will help reduce teen and unwanted pregnancies and fatherlessness in Tulare County. The joint effort will help to reduce the teenage pregnancy rate in this County by offering a multifaceted program that encourages youth as early as sixth grade to make positive choices and set goals that will enrich their lives.

The project encompasses four major strategies:
  • Classroom Family Life Education presentations to targeted students in sixth to eighth grades in the following school districts: Alta Vista, Cutler-Orosi, Farmersville, Oak Valley, Pixley, Pleasant View, Sunnyside, Tipton, and Traver. Instruction is provided by a School Nurse and a Health Educator from the Tulare County Office of Education School Health Programs under the Community Challenge Grant.

  • Classroom Family Life Education presentations to targeted continuation high schools: Deep Creek Academy, La Sierra Military Academy, Mid-County Community School, Superior Community School, and Tulare Tech Prep High School. Instruction is provided by a School Nurse and a Health Educator from the Tulare County Office of Education School Health Programs under the Community Challenge Grant.

  • A series of four career-awareness classroom activities that promote long-range positive goals. This intervention is offered to participating sixth-grade students in the unincorporated areas. Business volunteers from the Tulare County Office of Education School-to-Career Program help provide these presentations.

  • Classroom presentations on HIV/STDs are presented by Peer Educators to targeted schools. Ten Tulare Tech Prep High School students completed a four-day training period using a state-approved curriculum.
